…As Police says Prominent Somali youth leader killed in Mogadishu***

The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has described the death of the Italy-based Nigeria international, Seun Ajetunmobi, as shocking.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ajetunmobi, born  on Oct.10, 1985, died on Thursday in Lagos as a result of gas explosion.

Anderson Bankole, a board member of NTTF, told NAN on Friday in Lagos that the federation had lost one of its key players.

The former technical director of NTTF also said that he was surprised and perplexed when he received the sad news of Ajetunmobi’s death.

“We have lost a key player in the table-tennis family.

“Nigeria has lost a very good, vibrant and committed player in the person of Ajetunmobi.

“It is really painful because rather than celebrating this young boy, we are mourning him,’’ he said.

Bankole said that the late Ajetunmobi was never found wanting as a national player in and out of season.

He was always making himself available whenever we needed his service for major tournaments, he said.

Also, a table-tennis coach with Lagos State, Samson Ajayi, said that the player exhibited impressive performances as a national player in his life time.

“I got the news hours ago and called the brother to the late Seun who confirmed the sad development.

“The deceased started well and exhibited impressive performances as a national player in various championships he featured at singles and teams’ events.

“These stood him out among his peers,’’ he said.

Ajayi also described Ajetunmobi as a humble, respectful and focused player.

“His lifestyle was a reference point used in counselling young players in the country.

“There is not much to say.

“Ajetunmobi is dead and it is painful, especially, for those of us that were part of his sport life as a national player.

“We encourage young players to emulate his attributes,’’ he said.

Tosin Oribamise, a national youth table tennis player described the late Ajetunmobi as a nice person, caring, loving and generous to young players.

“He was always taking the advantage of his off season to visit home and support up-and-coming players.

“NTTF has lost a star player.

“I cannot describe brother Ajetunmobi enough because he was a good person and supported young players in his little way, we will miss him,’’ Oribamise said.

Faith Bazuaye, a Para-Table tennis player said that, “it was unbelievable that Ajetunmobi is dead, he was a friendly, kind hearted and an easygoing player.

“We will really miss him because he was a friendly person and encouraged us whenever he was around.

“He was always training with us in this Lock Hall whenever he came home,’’ Bazuaye said.

Ranti Lajide, a certified table-tennis umpire, said that Ajetunmobi was a dedicated player and contributed his quota to table tennis development.

“It was a shock to hear that Ajetunmobi died on Thursday night.

“He was a player that had paid his dues and left a footprint that will always speak volume of him,’’ he said.

NAN reports that Ajetunmobi won the last Aso Cup Table Tennis Championship held in Abuja in May.

He was part of the Nigerian table tennis team at the last All Africa Games, held in Congo Brazzaville in 2015.

In the meantime, a prominent youth leader was shot dead on Thursday evening by suspected Somali militant group al-Shabab as he walked home after evening prayers in Mogadishu, police said.

A police officer confirmed on Friday that Abdiweli Mohamed, the Chairman of the Warta Nabadda district Youth Group, was killed by two armed men who accosted him while on his way home in the central Wardhigley district of the restive Mogadishu.

“The youth activist was shot dead at Iftar time (evening prayers) by unknown armed men who fled the scene after the shooting.

“We are investigating the incident,” said the police officer who declined to be named.

No group has claimed responsibility for the latest killing amid a series of other assassination incidents that have since been reported during the holy month of Ramadan.

The latest incident also comes after the militant group released a video record of some of the brutal assassinations the insurgents have carried out recently against individuals accused of working with local governments.

Accident Takes 10 Lives, Injures 3 On Damaturu-Maiduguri Road

…As Islamic leaders in Kwara condemn the killing of Hafsoh Lawal

Incessant road crashes have sadly continued to take severe tolls on Nigerians, with the latest report showing that 10 persons have died in Yobe, while three others sustained injuries in an accident that occurred on Damaturu- Maiduguri Road.

The State police command spokesman, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed this in Damaturu on Tuesday.

He said that the incident occurred at a security checkpoint in Warsala Town around 10 am on Tuesday when a truck loaded with cement and passengers hit a car before it plunged into a ditch.

Abdulkarim said that of the 13 passengers on the trailer,10 died instantly, while the three sustained injuries.

He said the injured had been conveyed to the Specialist Hospital, Damaturu for treatment.

The spokesman said that the investigation revealed that the truck allegedly lost control and rammed into a car at the checkpoint before it made its way into the ditch.

He said the car driver, who was alone in the car, survived the accident unhurt, but the car was damaged.

In another development, Islamic leaders in Kwara, under the aegis of Kwara State Council of Ulama, on Tuesday condemned the alleged killing of Hafsoh Lawal by one Abdulrahman Bello for ritual purposes.

The leaders included the Chief Imam of Offa, Sheikh Muyideen Hussein; Chief Imam of Malete, Abdullah Ibrahim; the Ajanasi of Ilorin; Chief Imam of Gambari, among others

Lawal, a final-year student of Kwara College of Education, was allegedly killed by Bello for rituals.

Sheikh Mohammad Salih, Chief Imam of Ilorin, made the condemnation on behalf of the council in Ilorin during a news conference.

Salih appealed to the police command in Kwara to be thorough in its investigations.

According to him, anyone found culpable in a criminal act should be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others with criminal intentions.

“We are interested in the course of justice for Hafsoh and her family. On our own part, we will not relent in assisting the security agencies in getting to the root of the matter.

“Nigerians should avoid the profiling of any community for the sinful acts of a few individuals in our midst.

“Ilorin and indeed, Kwara, are not homes for ritualists. We are known for our Islamic culture, of which ritualism is not a part.

“Ritual acts are offensive to all known religions. We must all rise up and be counted in the war against it,” he said.

The chief imam also said there would be a meeting with various Muslim leaders and clerics to prevent a similar occurrence in Kwara and the nation.

According to Salih, efforts will also be doubled in preaching the correct attitude towards the propagation of Islam.

“Since the unfortunate incident, we have stepped up counselling activities of alfas and other clerics on the best conduct in preaching Islam that Kwara and Ilorin have been known for through the ages.

“The council, therefore, condemns the murder of Miss Hafsoh Lawal by Alfa Abdulrahaman Bello for ritual purposes.

“We commiserate with the family of Hafsoh, who has been thrown into mourning due to the ungodly act of Abdulrahman. In this moment of grief, it is only Allah who can console the family,” he said.

The chief imam also commended Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara for the peaceful co-existence which encouraged the growth and development of the state.
