Experts lauds CBN’s proposed policy for loan defaulters to forfeit deposits in other banks

… As DJ Avicii killed himself with glass***

There was confusion at the headquarters of the Central Bank of Nigeria on Tuesday following a fire incident at the generator house.

The fire was said to have started few minutes after 6pm and lasted for about 30 minutes before it was put out.

Our correspondent, who visited the headquarters of the CBN, observed that men of the Federal Fire Service were at the scene to ensure that the fire did not get out of control.

Apart from the Federal Fire Service that deployed two firefighting trucks in the scene of the incident, a truck belonging to Julius Berger was also sited at the apex bank’s headquarters.

The Assistant Comptroller, FFS, Bello Atayin, who spoke with our correspondent, said the fire started at the generator house.

He attributed the fire incident to a technical fault at the generator house, adding that the service was quick in putting it out before it got out of control.

Atayin said, “The fire incident started at the generator house on the west side of the building and we were alerted.

“It was a minor fire incident and it has been put under control.”

When contacted, the Acting Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, however, said there was no fire at the apex bank.

In a statement issued on Tuesday night, he said, “Reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s head office building is on fire are false.

“Passers-by, who saw a pall of exhaust from the generator house far away from the building apparently mistook the exhaust for fire smoke.

“The CBN maintains a total security system that triggers safety alarms in the presence of smoke and so all fire engines and personnel received the alert only to discover that it was an unusual pall of exhaust.

“The affected generator has been rested and normal work has been uninterrupted, while the engineers are working to rectify the issues with the generator.

“We hereby assure the general public that there has been no fire at our building.”

In the meantime, dance music superstar Avicii committed suicide by slashing himself with a shard of glass, the celebrity gossip site TMZ reported Tuesday.

A representative for the Swedish DJ did not reply to requests for comment. But his family earlier insinuated that Avicii had killed himself.

“He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness,” his family said in an open letter on Thursday. “He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace.”

TMZ, quoting unnamed sources, said that Avicii inflicted intensive bleeding by cutting himself with glass, possibly from a bottle.

The 28-year-old whose real name was Tim Bergling was found dead on April 20 while on vacation in Oman.

Police in the Gulf sultanate said that there was no indication of foul play.

Avicii had long spoken of his problems with alcoholism and his struggles as an introvert in adapting to the hard-partying DJ lifestyle.

He stunned fans in 2016 by retiring from touring at the age of just 26, although he later returned to the studio.

Avicii was one of the first DJs to bring electronic dance music into the mainstream, filling festivals and winning radio airplay as he collaborated with artists including Madonna and Coldplay.

Accident Takes 10 Lives, Injures 3 On Damaturu-Maiduguri Road

…As Islamic leaders in Kwara condemn the killing of Hafsoh Lawal

Incessant road crashes have sadly continued to take severe tolls on Nigerians, with the latest report showing that 10 persons have died in Yobe, while three others sustained injuries in an accident that occurred on Damaturu- Maiduguri Road.

The State police command spokesman, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed this in Damaturu on Tuesday.

He said that the incident occurred at a security checkpoint in Warsala Town around 10 am on Tuesday when a truck loaded with cement and passengers hit a car before it plunged into a ditch.

Abdulkarim said that of the 13 passengers on the trailer,10 died instantly, while the three sustained injuries.

He said the injured had been conveyed to the Specialist Hospital, Damaturu for treatment.

The spokesman said that the investigation revealed that the truck allegedly lost control and rammed into a car at the checkpoint before it made its way into the ditch.

He said the car driver, who was alone in the car, survived the accident unhurt, but the car was damaged.

In another development, Islamic leaders in Kwara, under the aegis of Kwara State Council of Ulama, on Tuesday condemned the alleged killing of Hafsoh Lawal by one Abdulrahman Bello for ritual purposes.

The leaders included the Chief Imam of Offa, Sheikh Muyideen Hussein; Chief Imam of Malete, Abdullah Ibrahim; the Ajanasi of Ilorin; Chief Imam of Gambari, among others

Lawal, a final-year student of Kwara College of Education, was allegedly killed by Bello for rituals.

Sheikh Mohammad Salih, Chief Imam of Ilorin, made the condemnation on behalf of the council in Ilorin during a news conference.

Salih appealed to the police command in Kwara to be thorough in its investigations.

According to him, anyone found culpable in a criminal act should be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others with criminal intentions.

“We are interested in the course of justice for Hafsoh and her family. On our own part, we will not relent in assisting the security agencies in getting to the root of the matter.

“Nigerians should avoid the profiling of any community for the sinful acts of a few individuals in our midst.

“Ilorin and indeed, Kwara, are not homes for ritualists. We are known for our Islamic culture, of which ritualism is not a part.

“Ritual acts are offensive to all known religions. We must all rise up and be counted in the war against it,” he said.

The chief imam also said there would be a meeting with various Muslim leaders and clerics to prevent a similar occurrence in Kwara and the nation.

According to Salih, efforts will also be doubled in preaching the correct attitude towards the propagation of Islam.

“Since the unfortunate incident, we have stepped up counselling activities of alfas and other clerics on the best conduct in preaching Islam that Kwara and Ilorin have been known for through the ages.

“The council, therefore, condemns the murder of Miss Hafsoh Lawal by Alfa Abdulrahaman Bello for ritual purposes.

“We commiserate with the family of Hafsoh, who has been thrown into mourning due to the ungodly act of Abdulrahman. In this moment of grief, it is only Allah who can console the family,” he said.

The chief imam also commended Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara for the peaceful co-existence which encouraged the growth and development of the state.
